Introduction to 1 & 2 Thessalonians

The apostle Paul and his fellow missionaries, Silas and Timothy, spent about three weeks in Thessalonica in 50 AD, during Paul’s second missionary journey.  The story of their experiences there is recorded in Acts 17:1-15.  During their brief visit, they were able to establish a church, but then a riot erupted, caused by a group of jealous Jews who claimed that Paul was trying to establish a new ruler, in opposition to Ceasar.  Paul and Silas had to leave town in a hurry, but Paul was anxious to know how the young church was faring, so he sent his faithful co-worker, Timothy, to check on them.  Timothy reported that they were still following the Lord, and relayed some of their questions about their newfound faith. 

In his first letter to the Thessalonians, written from Corinth just a few months after he was with them, Paul answers those questions.  His second letter, written a few months later, further clarifies things they still didn’t understand, especially relating to future events surrounding the second coming of Christ.

1 & 2 Thessalonians address issues like: How can I be sure I will be with Jesus after I die?  Is Jesus really coming again?  How can I be sure Jesus still loves me and hasn’t forgotten about me when I’m suffering persecution?  How do I know my life is pleasing to the Lord?

These are great letters for all believers to study.  Through them, we can find answers to our questions, assurance of God’s love for us, assurance of our salvation, insights into the Second coming of the Lord, and lots of  encouragement.
